Farmer, Hit By Bolt, Dies
Totty Knocked From Tractor Week Ago
Injuries suffered when he was struck by lightning while riding his tractor a week ago led to the death of James Totty, Burrton [Kansas] farmer, at a local hospital today. He would have been 66 years old next Monday.
Immediate cause of death was double pneumonia, induced by the raw fumes of fuel oil which splashed into his face from a 10-gallon can toppled off the tractor with him by the thunderbolt.
Knocked from his seat by the bolt, which seared the back of his head and arm, Totty lay unconscious for several minutes breathing the poisonous fumes, his daughter, Miss Irene Totty, Kansas City, said. The oil was not ignited by the flash.
Surviving are two daughters, Miss Totty and Mrs. C[ornie] O[liver] [Gladys Mae] Barnhart, also of Kansas City, and four grandchildren. The funeral will be held at Burrton.
