Loren...the town of Coats, Kansas was named about 1887 in honor of William A. Coats, an official of the railroad and also a director of a company promoting new towns. This information came from the book "Pioneer Saints and Sinners" by J. Rufus Gray, it is a history of Pratt County, Kansas from its beginnings to 1900. I read the entire section on Coats and did not see your g/uncle Byron Adelbet (B.A.) Coates mentioned. The book does not have an index of names so I can't check the whole book. There are a number of Coates listed in the area wide phone book, they are in Coldwater, Greensburg, Anthony and Wellington if that helps. Also note the difference in the spelling of your Uncle's name and the town's name.
