John Conrad Wentz and wife Cecilia(CeCelia)Tylee Wentz, left Downs, Osborne Co., KS in 1943, moving to Atchison, KS, after retiring from Missouri Pacific Railroad. The ten children of John Conrad Wentz and Cecilia(CeCelia)Tylee Wentz were noted in the 1961 obituaries of John and Cecilia Wentz to be, John David Wentz (died in infancy), Mable Wentz Maycroft, born 1902, Dora Wentz Buchanan, Ethel V. Wentz Hunt, born 1906, Ralph Edward Wentz, born 1910, Margaret Wentz Thummel, and Cora Wentz Henley, all of Atchison, KS, and George Washington Wentz, born Feb 22, 1912, of Kansas City, MO, and Arbutis Wentz Lair of Portland, OR and Ida Wentz Wadham, born abt 1918 KS, of Chula Vista, CA. In the 1938 obituary of sister Caroline Wentz Hohner Stumme Cornelius, surviving brother, John Conrad Wentz, was noted as still residing in Downs, Osborne Co., KS. -------------------------------------------- Hannah Elizabeth Ailers (Eilers), 24, born September 29, 1860, Sullivan Co., PA, residence Osborne County, KS, 1885. Hannah Elizabeth Wentz married about 1877 to John D. Ailers, born about 1830 in Germany. 1880 Federal Census, John D., age 38, Hannah, age 20, and daughter Caroline Carrie, age 2, born November 10, 1878, Osborne Co., KS, resided in Bloom, Osborne Co., KS. Hannah's daughter, Caroline Carrie Ailers Stories from Osborne, KS, book "They Came" Osborne County Genealogical & Historical Society 307 W Main St Osborne, KS 67473 "Anson Harvey Bliss, son of Chauncey M. and Caroline M. Campbell Bliss, was born November 8, 1858 in Cottage Grove, Wisconsin. He came to Kansas with his parents, five brothers and sisters. Grandmother Bliss and Mary Burke, a foster daughters of his parents, and others. They left Cottage Grove, Wisconsin in the spring of 1870. On August 3, 1870 they arrived in Osborne, Kansas and spent the fall and winter in the Dave Willis stockade. Chauncey Bliss moved his family to a homestead in Independence Township, there each of the three older boys took a homestead." "Anson "Harvey" married Carrie C. Ailers, September 5, 1897 in Osborne, Kansas. Carrie, daughter of John and Hanna Wince Ailers, was born November 10, 1878 in Osborne County, Kansas. They lived in a dugout on land now owned by Wendell Mock (1977)." "The children born to A. Harvey and Carrie were Dewey, born July 14, 1898 in the dugout in Independence Township, married Ramona E. Rohrer, August 11, 1942 in Smith Center, Kansas; Ruth Caroline, born July 19, 1900 in White Horse, Oklahoma, married to Stanley Becker in Tacoma, Washington, died July 6, 1977 in Tacoma, Washington; Maude Pearl, born March 5, 1903 at Cawker City, Kansas, married Herbert Bandy in Seibert, Colorado; Laura B., born September 20, 1905 in Hancock Township, Osborne County, Kansas, married Leonard Clair Casteel in Smith Center, Kansas." "A. Harvey, Carrie, and baby son, Dewey, went by covered wagon to White Horse, Oklahoma and were there three years or so when they came back to Cawker City, Kansas by covered wagon. They brought three cows with them. They then returned to Osborne County and purchased his father's homestead in 1905 after his mother passed away. On this place stood the only frame house between Covert and Osborne, Kansas. It was a stopping place for travelers. Several marrages and many babies were born there. Wooden pegs that held the house together are still in the possession of family members." "The son Dewey, was later adopted by John and Meda Carlin and now goes by the name of Dewey Carlin." "A. Harvey passed away May 28, 1905 on his father's homestead which he owned. He is buried in the Bristow Cemetery, Independence Township. His wife Carrie, passed away in Denver, Colorado, June 23, 1945. She is Buried in Denver, Colorado." Also residing in the household was Carrie's Aunt, Hannah Wentz Ailers' daughter Maggie Ailers, age 12, born Oct 3, 1887 KS, father born Germany, mother born PA. 1900 Federal Census found John D. Ailers 66, Hanna E. Ailers 39, George W. Ailers, 18, born Feb 4, 1882 Osborne Co., KS, Lena M. Ailers, 14, born Nov 6, 1885 Osborne Co., KS, Maggie A. Ailers 12, born Oct 3, 1887 KS, were residing Independence, Osborne Co., KS. Maggie A. Ailers, age 12, was dually noted as also residing with her Aunt Caroline Carrie Ailers Bliss in Tilden, Osborne Co., Kansas in the 1900 Federal Census. 1905 Kansas State Census, Hannah and John Ailers were noted as living in Hancock, Osborne Co., KS. 1910 Federal Census indicates John Ailers has passed as Widow Hannah Ailers, 49, was noted as a servant for the William Murphy family of Jackson, Osborne Co., KS. Widow Hannah Wentz Ailers would remarry in 1913 to Balser F. Roeder, born in Germany about 1848, and move to Hastings, Adams Co., NE. 1903. The Bliss family returned to Osborne Co., KS and lived on Anson's father's homestead up until his death May 1905. Grandmother Scharlottie Wentz, as noted in her 1902 obituary, resided in OK and WI between 1885 and 1898. Scharlottie Wentz may have timed her family visit to coincide with the birth of her great grandson, Dewey Bliss, July 14, 1898, in Independence Township, KS. 1900 Federal Cenus, Carrie and Anson Bliss were noted as living in Tilden, Osborne Co., KS along with wife Carrie's Aunt, Maggie Ailers, in the household. March 1905 KS State Census, the Bliss family and neighbor, the Ailers family, has moved to Hancock, Osborne Co., KS. Carrie Ailers Bliss became a widow May 28, 1905. Carrie gave birth to her last Bliss child 4 months later, Laura B. Bliss, born September 20, 1905, in Hancock Township, Osborne County, Kansas. Caroline Carrie Ailers Bliss remarried Joseph Ellsworth Anderson in Osborne Co., KS in 1906. Caroline Carrie Anderson and Joseph E. Anderson, would combine families of Bliss and Anderson children, and relocate from Hancock, Osborne Co., KS to Seibert, Kit Carson Co., Colorado in 1906. Hannah Wentz Ailers' grandson, George Dewey Bliss, would be adopted by John Carlin. 1915 KS State Census indicated the John Carlin family was living in Independence, Osborne Co., KS. G. D.(Dewey) Carlin, male 16, and R. E. Bliss, male 8, was noted in the household. 1930 Federal Census, indicated John F. Carlin 48, Meda E. Carlin 48, Dewey G. Carlin 32 adopted son, Bonnie L. Carlin 19, residing in Victor, Osborne, KS. Dewey G. Carlin would marry Ramona E. Rohrer. Dewey Carlin died July 1987, last known residence Natoma, Osborne, KS. Hannah's son George William Ailers born Feb 4, 1882, Osborne, Osborne Co., KS, resided in townships of Independence, Tilden, and Covert in Osborne Co. KS. G. W. Ailers moved to Salina, KS about 1919. The 1920 Federal Census, noted household, George Ailers 36, Millie St. Clair Ailers 34, John William Ailers 12, Sylvia Ailers 10, Elmeda Ailers 5, Goldie Ailers 1 9/12 were residing Salina Ward 4, Saline Co., Kansas. Widower George William Ailers died May 4, 1941 in Salina, Saline Co. KS, age 59 years, from heart disease. He was buried in the Memorial Park cemetery. Hannah Wentz Ailers' daughter Lena Mary Ailers and husband James C. Anderson would move from Osborne, Osborne Co., Kansas to Seibert, CO with sister Caroline Carrie Ailers Bliss Anderson and Joseph Anderson around 1906. ------------------------------------------------- Charles David Wentz, born April 1869, Sullivan Co., PA was noted as living in Downs, Osborne Co., KS in the 1885 probate of his father Conrad Wentz estate. Charles Wentz was last noted as living in Farmers Valley, Hamilton Co., Nebraska, 1900 Federal Census, working as a servant for William and Hattie Stockham family.
