I am looking for the burial place and an Osage County obituary for William Hairgrove & his wife Sarah (Johnson) Hairgrove. The family was found in the 1870 census living in Centerville Township, Neosho County, Kansas. But when he died on March 13, 1872 his residents was located in Osage County (according to an obituary printed in Linn County, Kansas). See below: Obituary of William Hairgrove, Saturday March 23, 1872, Linn County KS Archives Obituaries Mr. William Hairgrove, formerly a resident of Valley Township, this county (Linn County), died at residence in Osage County on Wednesday of last week. Mr. Hairgrove was a native of Georgia, and seventy-two years of age at the time of his death. He was one of the few survivors of the infamous John (Charles) Hamilton massacre in Valley Township near the Missouri state line, on the 19th day of May, 1858, at which time eleven peaceful and quit men were taken prisoners, mercilessly shot down and most of them killed. Mr. Hairgrove was wounded in three places, and for a while it was thought he could not survive but a strong constitution and careful nursing brought him though. He was always a staunch and true republican, and much respected by all who knew him. To the citizens of Valley Township the news of his death will bring sorrow and cause a tear to drop to the memory of the man who was one of old John Browns staunchest friends, and ever a warm supporter of the principles of right and justice. From the March 23, 1872 Lacygne Weekly Journal, Linn County, Kansas Comment on above obituary: William was not a "native of Georgia" although he spent a number of years there (at least five or more of his children were born in Georgia). But William was born in South Carolina, so says the 1850, 1860 U.S. census. His children in later censuses also give South Carolina as their father's birthplace. ................ Sarah (Johnson) Hairgrove died around 1879, but may or may not be buried in Osage County (she was born July 11, 1802). I also have a copy of a picture of William, but it looks like it was copied (zerox) from a book, and is of very poor quality. I was hoping that someone might also have a decent picture of him. Any help would be much appreciated. Notify Administrator about this message?
