In 1922 Elsie Newland, Secretary of The First Christian Church of Chanute, KS wrote to the Commissioner of Pensions concerning John Newland, soldier in the Revolutionary War from VA. Elsie was interested in obtianing the record of her ancestor to join the DAR.

The History of Wilson & Neosho Counties, KS, pages 479-481, is said to include information on the family and children of John Newland and Rachael McAuley who d. 19 Jan 1895.

Rachael was d/o William MaAuley. She m. 1838 John Newland who was s/o Nicholas Newland & Priscilla Murphy. Nicholas Newland is said to be the s/o John Newland, soldier of the Revolution who enlisted in the Continental Army in Winchester, Frederick Co., VA in 1776/77.

Archibald Newland, a descendant of Nicholas & Priscilla Newland, m. Hazel Cottrell. Hazel was d/o Elias B. Corrtell and Cecelia F. Bender who were m. in Neosho Co., KS 27 Feb 1873. Hazel was a sister to Ray N. Cottrell [1894-1967] the father of my wife.

My G3 grandmother, Mary Elizabeth (Isabella) Newland [1801-1844] who m. John Davis in 1819 is a descendant of this Newland Family and I am working on both lines: Newland & Cottrell.

I will appreciate any information on either or both families. Thanks.
