VETERAN MINISTER DEAD
Dr. G. W. Martin Taught Greek to Students of Two Colleges
Death has claimed one of Kansas’ oldest ministers. Dr. G. W. Martin passed away at
4:00 this morning at the age of 90 years and 10 months. For the last eight years he and Mrs.
Martin had made their home here with their daughter, Mrs. P. C. Smith. Dr. Martin had been in
feeble health for a year or two, but his condition became critical only about a week ago.
Dr. Martin devoted three score years to religious and educational teaching. He served as
superintendent of several schools in southeastern Kansas before the turn of the century. He took
the chair of Greek in Baker university about 1893 when classical Greek classes were almost as
large as those enrolled in Latin. Later he transferred to the department of ancient languages at
Southwestern college at Winfield.
Entering the ministry about 1903, Dr. Martin spent two decades in pastorates at
Concordia, Beloit, Macomb, Ill., Perry, Enid, Tulsa, and Shawnee, Okla. His last seven years of
active work were devoted to Kansas City, Kansas, university. He is survived by a widow, Mrs.
Louise Martin, and two children, A. J. Martin of Okemah, Okla., and Mrs. P. C. Smith.
The funeral services will be held in the Methodist church at 4 o’clock Sunday afternoon
by Rev. J. J. Clinton. Interment in Greenwood cemetery.

MRS. MARTIN DIES
Would Have Been 93 in May - Funeral Tomorrow Afternoon
Mrs. G. W. Martin, who would have been 93 years old in May, died at a local nursing
home about 10 o’clock last night. She had been ill and bedfast for the past two weeks.
The aged woman came here from Okemah, Okla., with her husband, a missionary,
minister and educator for many years, about 10 years ago, and they made their home with their
daughter, Mrs. P C Smith, until the death of Mr. Martin. They at one time lived in South
America for more than a year when Mr. Martin was a missionary in Brazil.
Upon their return to the states, Mr. and Mrs. Martin lived in Arkansas for several years
before moving to Oklahoma. The latter was in the ministry for 24 years and was in school work
for 30 years.
Mrs. Martin is survived also by one son, Arthur J Martin of Okemah but he will be unable
to come for funeral services because of illness. Henry Bick of Canton, Mo., a brother, also will
be unable to come.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home here tomorrow afternoon at 2:30
o’clock, with the Rev J J Clinton in charge. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery.
