Lanes in New Jersey, Illinois, and Kansas

I believe I am descended from Matthys Jansen Laenen Van Pelt of the "Dutch" Lanes who came from Liege, Belgium on the "Rose Tree" in 1663.

Comparing family Bible records; A. Van Doren Honeyman’s, “The Lane Families of Somerset County [NJ] and Vicinity,” Somerset County Historical Quarterly, vol. 2, #1 (1913), pp. 110-119 continuing thru the various Lane Family entries in the rest of SCHQ vol. 2-4; Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey (vol. 35, No. 3, among other entries); census records and clues from others, I think Honeyman mixed up Aaron Lane No. 9 and Aaron Lane No. 12 in his research.

The information below is from copies of some pages of our 1793 Lane Family Bible (in my nephew's possession).

The title page reads: "The Holy Bible Containing The Old and New Testaments: Translated out of the Original Tongues with the Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised, By His Majesty's Special Command. Appointed to be Read in Churches." [crest or seal of Lion on left and Unicorn on right with some heraldry symbol between and a little lion (?) standing on top with the Latin phrase 'Dieu et Mon Droit' beneath] "Edinburgh: Printed by Mark and Charles Kerr, His Majesty's Printers MDCCXCIII."}

This Bible was originally owned by Aaron Lane [23 Aug 1775- 03 Nov 1844] and his wife Catherine DeMott [21 Jan 1777-28 Oct 1852].

Their children are listed as:
"Elizah Lane born july 30 1796
Catherine Lane born April 26 (?) 1799
Aaron Lane junr born April 22 1803
Cornelius Lane born March 18 1808"

This Aaron Lane's family is listed below:
"Maj Aaron Lane born April 22 1803
His wife Catherine Hammer born Feb 26th 1802
Children
Cornelius H[?] Lane born Feb 7th 1825 [on another page--and died in Kans]
Aaron Lane born Nov 12th 1827
Sarah Mariah Lane born March 5th 1829
John Lane July 26th 1830
Henry Lane Dec 14th 1831
Peter Lane Dec 20th 1833
David Lane July 20th 1835
Peter Theodore Lane Jan 4th 1838
Catherine E Lane August 22 1839
William Kline Lane March 31st 1843"

[The above list is on another page in another hand with the following at the bottom of the list]

"Sarah Mariah Lane was married to David D Schamp at Reading Nov 30th 1850
Catherine E Lane was married to Steven Gano Oct 9th 1864 at Reading"

[In this same hand is the following:]
"Aaron's Great Great Garad [stet] father
Cornelius Lane's family
[name scratched out looks like Katarin
was born
Cathrine Lane       Nov 12th 1734              grandfather
[Orie scratched out] Aory Dec 30th 1736
Gilbert Apr 23d 1739
Christian Apr 20th 1741
Mary Nov 9th 1843
Cornelius Feb 17th 1745
[top of next column, same line as crossed original Katarin entry]
Abram Nov 18th 1748
John               Mar 2d 1751
Jacob               May 27th 1753
Nellie               Apr 6th 1757"

I have a theory (unproven) that around the late 1700's my Lane family made the transition from the Dutch to the English language. Thus Aory (b. 1736) turns into Aaron from 1836 on.

The above mentioned Bible has been in the possession of an Aaron Lane, through 7 generations since 1777. It will, hopefully, be passed down to the 8th generation at a Lane family reunion this August in Kansas (where the 3rd Aaron moved in the last half of the 19th century).
