Helen,
The Dalton gang's last raid on Coffeyville was in 1892 and, according to one website, "As the bandits tried to make good their escape a fierce gun battle took place in which four citizens and four bandits lost their life." However, I don't believe these citizens were killed FOR anything but rather simply as a result of the gunfire.
I have a special interest in the Dalton gang because my great uncle, John Henry Kloehr, killed several of the Dalton gang members on the day of their last raid.
If your ggm was killed in 1898, it would not have been by the Dalton gang.
