Thanks for your suggestions and for providing all the useful links. I have not yet obtained Joseph's civil war military records. I didn't realize that those records might indicate which Ohio county he was born in, which could help me locate his parents. That sounds like a good avenue for me to follow next. The Joseph Shaw I am researching was in the 118th IL infantry, company G. He was a captain. Joseph was my g-g-grandfather, and his son Charles was my g-grandfather. According to the image of the 1880 US census from Cowley county, KS, Joseph's father was born in LA, and Elvira's was born in ME. So far I haven't been able to find anything definite on either set of parents.
