Still been digging around for more info for you! I found a marriage record in Coles Co., IL for William H. Nichols and Mariah H. Shoots of 28 May 1868. It is recorded in Bk. E, p. 165.

So, then I looked for the Shoots/Shoot family to find the following--
1860 census - Ashmore Twp., Coles Co., IL - p. 260:
John Shoots, 40, KY
Mary L., 33, IL
?Mariah?, 14, IL
Tilford T., 11, IL
Albert, 8, IL
William, 3, IL
?Mariah?, 6, IL

1870 census - Ashmore Twp., Coles Co., IL - p. 3:
John "Sheets", 51, KY
Melissa, 43, IN
Albert, 18, IL
William, 12, IL
Elmer, 5, IL
Rollie, 2, IL
Mary Fitch, 17, IL
Tilford Fitch, 21, IL

1880 census - Charleston, Coles Co., IL - p. 64D:
John S. Shoot, 58, KY, parents b in VA
Melissa, 34, IN, father b in TN, mother in IN
Elmer, 15, IL
William, 22, IL

I found a marriage record for John Shoot who married Mary Holland 17 Apr 1843 in Crawford Co., IL. Recorded in Bk. A, p. 96, license #869.

Do you know if this is your line? Hope it is. Good luck with your research.

Marilyn
