Thank you, Jean, for your very kind response. Now, I believe you may have found my Elizabeth (Lizzie?) even though the birth date is a year off.
My reasoning? My mother-in-law was named after her two grandmothers - Emma (after Emma Sly Fairbairn) and Louise - after Louisa? At least this gives me a solid starting point. I will write to the State of Kansas for a birth certificate.
I THOUGHT I had a paid-up subscription to Ancestry.com - accessed the 1850 census last Friday night, however, when I tried to search the Kansas censuses night before last, access was denied.
Since you have been so helpful, I'll give you an excellent resource to check. To find the location of nearly anything (school, lake, cemetery, pond, museum, et cetera) go to http://www.topowest.com/main.html. Click on the state you wish to access. About half of them are complete (with images). Either input the name of what you are looking for, or use the A-Z search. When the map comes up, click on "View at 125 DPI." Good luck. And thanks again.
