The United States Biographical Dictionary, Kansas Volume S. Lewis & Company Publishers, Chicago & Kansas City, 1879 Pages 824-825 John B. Winkler, Marysville John B. Winkler was a native of Pennsylvania, born in Westmoreland County, February 13, 1841 (NOTE: John was born in Germany according to census information). His father, George J. Winkler, was a native of Germany, and a Lieutenant in the wars of Napoleon. After his immigration to America he settled in Pennsylvania, and became a prosperous and influential man, following the pursuits of farming until his death, which occurred at his home in his adopted state in 1875, at the age of seventy-seven. His mother’s maiden name was Ottillia Switzler, and she was also a native of Germany. The parents were both of exemplary Christian character, the father being a member of the Lutheran Church, and the mother a devout Catholic. Mr. Winkler had the advantages of a good primary education, both in English and German, being more fortunate in this respect than many others. In April 1861, he enlisted in the first company, which left Pittsburg, and started for the front on the very day of the fall of Sumter. He served with his Company until its time of service expired in August 1861, and then re-enlisted in Company B, 35th Pennsylvania (afterward known as the 74th) and soon after received promotion as Corporal, and then as Sergeant and then Lieutenant. He was actively engaged during his second term of service, participating in the Battles of Cross Keys, Freeman’s Landing, Second Bull Run, Chancellors Ville, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg, besides being in many minor engagements. At Gettysburg he was so severely wounded that, for a time, he was considered beyond recovery, but eventually recovered and was honorably discharged in January 1864. After his return from the Army he entered the Iron City Commercial College at Pittsburg, where he continued his studies and graduated with the Class of 1865. During the next year he carried on the business of a druggist for nearly a year in Pittsburg, and then for over three years was engaged as clerk in a large manufacturing establishment. In 1868 he removed to Nebraska, remaining nearly a year, and then went to Kansas and settled in Marshall County. After taking up a homestead he devoted his time chiefly to the improvement of his farm and teaching school and was remarkably successful in both undertakings, by being diligent and persevering. He still owns the original homestead, and has added to it two or three other farms, thus becoming an extensive landowner. In connection with his operations in farming he, in company with his brother (NOTE: George Winkler), established a grocery and provision store in Marysville, and carries on a very lucrative trade. He has met with much success in all of his business affairs, manifesting great energy and determination of character, and those inherent qualities, which are a guaranty of financial success. Mr. Winkler has held various local offices in the City of Marysville, and has proven himself worthy of the confidence of the people. He has taken an active interest in educational affairs, having been a prominent member of the School Board and is now acting in the capacity of Treasurer. He has been Justice of the Peace, and in 1873 was elected Register of Deeds for Marshall County, re-elected in 1875 and again in 1877. He is a member of the Masonic Order and Secretary of Marysville Lodge No. 91, and also a member of the Knights of Pythias and Knights of Honor. In his religious convictions he is orthodox and has long been associated with the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Winkler has been twice married. His first wife was Miss Nancy A. Binkey, to whom he was married December 25, 1865. She was a native of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. She died two years after her marriage, leaving one child – Mary Ottillia. His second wife was Miss Mary Jane Stonebraker of Marshall County, Kansas. They were married April 1, 1872, and have had four children, all of whom are now living.
