I called the Leavenworth National Cemetery - number is (913)758-4105 - and spoke with a very helpful staff member there. That yielded information about the unit in which my ancestor served during the Civil War which, in turn, is leading me to his military records on file with the National Archives.

In researching further the "Old Soldiers Home" system, what is officially called the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. Records for soldiers who served with the Union Army are housed with the National Archives - record group 15. The amount of information available through the Archives' regional offices varies. The Kansas City branch will have information on at least the Leavenworth facility, since that was located within the region. Hope this information is useful to someone out there.
