The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa Saturday, December 1, l877 Salem, Jewel County, Kan. Friend Dan: We are here and settled for the present. Claims are very scarce and have to be bought. Am well pleased with the looks of things generally. We can winter here very cheap. Corn is selling at 15 cents per bushel, wheat, 60 cents, potatoes, 20 cents, and oats 15 cents. Hay is selling at $2.00 per ton, dry goods, groceries, tobaccos and the necessaries of life, such as whisky, flour and pork, are much the same as in Lucas. Our wigwam is situated 15 miles east of Smith Centre, where we will be found at all times, to welcome all of our old friends, and as many of our new ones as are willing to give us a call. Now this is a general invitation, so no one must feel aggrieved. I shall be back next winter to see old friends and attend to business. Send me the Leader, Dan, as I want to know how things go. -- S.P.
