Ella ‘Alta’ West was born about 1866 in Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana and she died about April 25, 1914 in Las Vegas, San Miguel County, New Mexico at age 48 – she was buried in Montefiore, Masonic, Odd Fellows Cemeteries, Las Vegas, New Mexico; she married Frank J. Gehring who was born 1861 probably in Crawfordsville - on September 01, 1884 in Montgomery County. Ella and Frank moved to Kansas. In 1899 Ella, age 33, and Frank, age 38, moved to Las Vegas, San Miguel County, New Mexico. Frank Gehring operated a hardware store on 6th Street and his brother Edward Gehring is listed (Las Vegas City Directory 1900) as a clerk in that store. Both lived at the Central Hotel, which was less than a full block away from the store. In those years there was a dire housing shortage and their residence in a hotel reflects that.
