Sorry Mike, so far the old Graham County shooting story I found isn't the right one. This one is about John Chaney, who was reported to be a rough character, by my Great Uncle Carl Kobler in a story he wrote around 1980 about the 1879 settlers around Penokee. Stories about Chaney, an early settler, were that he liked guns and may have been acquainted with an interstate gang that liked other peoples horses! The shooting news story was reprinted Nov 24, 1955 in the Hill City Times from their files of Nov. 1883. It tells of an election day fracas at Gettysburg and reported severe and possible fatal shootings of a man and woman. John Chaney, Willis Ellsworth and F.D. McFadden had a disagreement at the election room over Ellsworth's candidacy for sheriff. Things got heated, They were ordered outdoors, where Chaney pulled his pistol and started pistol whipping McFadden. Postmaster Atkin came running from across the street with a gun, lots of shots were fired with Chaney getting hit 4 times once over the heart and both arms were broken. Atkin’s coat was pierced but was uninjured. A Mrs. Clubb came running out to see the action and was shot in the neck. Atkin was not arrested. I know there are at least a couple more juicy stories of the old days in the boxes some place. I'll keep searching.
