Louise, a good place to start is the 1865 Kansas State census for Douglas county, Ks. The listings for those killed in Quantrill's raid were never complete (far as I can tell). I, too, am searching family in and around Lawrence at this time. I have found most on the 1865 census. Try asking your local library if they can interlibrary loan -- I L L -- this microfilm for you. This may be your quickest way unless you can do the drive to Lawrence or Topeka.
Also, I believe that Iowa had an 1865 census, too. Since you know some of your family there after 1863, that may be a good start.
You might also try checking the Kansas Civil War Rosters; perhaps they joined the military and that would be a lead to those records. Happy hunting...
