From the Topeka [KS] State Journal, March 15, 1912, p. 10: OLD WAGON MAKER DIED. S. D. D. Smith Was Formerly Buffalo Bill’s Teacher. Atchison, Kan., March 15. – S. D. D. Smith, 73 years old, is dead at his home here of a general breakdown. Smith was a pioneer, locating in Leavenworth in 1855 as a school teacher in Salt Creek. Among his pupils was Wm. F. Cody (Buffalo Bill). Later Smith engaged in the wagon making business, making wagons for the government at Leavenworth during the war, and continuing the business at Atchison where he located in 1864. Here he made wagons to supply overland freighters. Notify Administrator about this message?
