Joseph W, Elmira, Nancy E, Winfield Scott Smith; Cottage Grove TWP
Posted by: David Reynolds (ID *****5643) Date: July 12, 2002 at 00:26:45

Looking for information on Joseph W Smith, born about 1833-1834 in Pennsylvania, married Lucinda, born about 1829, Kentucky. They had three children, all born Iowa: Elmira (1853), Nancy E (1860), Winfield Scott (1861-1862). Living in Mahaska County, Iowa in 1860, Allen County, Kansas in 1870.

The death certificate of Elmira Smith Whitford states that she was the daughter of Joe Smith, and that she was born 5 May 1853 in Iowa, and died 21 Dec 1937 in Bloomington, San Bernardino County, California. I have the 1860-1870-1880-1900/1920-1930 census entries for Elmira, and all state that she was born in Iowa, her father was born in Pennsylvania, and her mother born in Kentucky.

The 1860 Census of Pleasant Grove, Mahaska County, Iowa (page 113, Dwelling 822) lists:
Joseph W Smith, 27, S&B Mason, Pennsyvlvania
-- Lucinda, 31, houswife, Kentucky
-- Elmira, 3, Iowa
-- Nancy E, 1/12, Iowa

The 1870 Census of Cottage Grove TWP, Allen County, Kansas (page 20, Dwelling 135) lists:
Joseph Smith, 36, Stone Mason, Pennsylvania
-- Elmira, 13, Keeping House for Father, Iowa
-- Nancy E, 10, at home
-- Winfield Scott, 8, at home

By 1880, Elmira has married Christopher Wm Whitford, and is living in Cottage Grove TWP, Allen County, Kansas, page 4, ED 1, Dwelling 31. What appears to be sister Nancy Smith, age 20, is listed on the next page as a servant in the household of J H Hamilton; the listing for Nancy shows a birthplace of Iowa, *both* parents born Pennsylvania. There is also an 18 year old Winfield S Smith listed in Perry, Woodson County (next to Allen County), as a farm laborer in the household of John Starkey (page 191B); Winfield is listed as born in Iowa, both parents born *Ohio*.

Could not find Joseph in 1880 or later. Winfield disapppears after 1880, but then turns up in Oregon in 1930, living with his sister Elmira.

This is basically all I have on these Smiths; suggestions on how to pursue this would be welcome.

Regards,
Dave
