I think you have hit upon the truth. A book "One Family's Story" lists Grotzinger, Cretsinger, Crutsinger, Curtsinger, Cutsinger, Kretsinger, and Krutsinger as all from one line, just many derivations. This book comes through the research by Garland Lacy and Steve Thrasher. Garland has (or had) a website--I've not been back there for quite some time--that you may want to check out:
