Finding great grandfather Krueger

I am still trying to learn about my Maternal grandfather, John Fredrick Kruger who was born in Dubuque Iowa in Dec.1887 We can find no record of his birth but there is a statement from his sister-in-law Theresa Krueger saying he was born in Iowa. He married Rose Tschol in about 1907 and she was Theresa's sister. My mother Marguerite (or Alvina Marguerite) was also born in Dubuques but we find no record of her birth. My grandfather's mother was Sophia Krueger married to John Krueger (same surname but no relation) in Germany. She later married someone named Dudensky (?) and then a Franz Winehappal(?) She had two other sons William and Herman. These things we can document but his John Krueger father we cannot find anywhere. In addition, someone said that he may have been the child of another relative and adopted. They are all dead and I would like to know what happened.
