Mary Hannah Krout wrote the following info. in a eulogy to her niece, Dr. Jane Elizabeth Bigelow. It is recorded in a copy of the Butler Alumnal Quarterly, Commencement Number
July, 1913 Vol.II No.2 Indianapolis. (I have the original)
Pg.63 "Dr. Jane Bigelow was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, May 9, 1887. She was the daughter of James D. Bigelow and Kate Krout Bigelow...Her grandfather, the late Robert Kennedy Krout was a tutor in Latin" (Butler College)...
Pg.66 ..."Michael Krout, from whom her grandfather was descended, bought substitutes for his five sons in the German army and emigrated to South Carolina. Roused by the cruelties of General Tarleton, he and his sons joined the American army and the father fell at the massacre of Colonel Ashe's command at Briar Creek"....
Pg67. "Her maternal grandfather, the late Robert Kennedy Krout, was a man of broad culture, of profound learning, and her grandmother, Caroline VanCleve Krout, shared fully the intellectual tastes of her husband, being a graceful writer, widely read and especially versed in the early Victorian poets."

Also: Saturday Spectator, Spring Fashion Number, March 15, 1913 Terre Haute,Indiana.
Pg.15 "Death of Dr. Jane Bigelow...
Dr. Jane Bigelow, younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James D. Bigelow died of scarlet fever in a hospital in New York City... She was carried off before her family could reach her... Her parents were spending the winter in California... Her uncle, Henry Bigelow of Colchester, South Carolina accompanied the body home on Thursday... Her Aunts the Misses Krout of Crawfordsville, came down and opened the family residence at 229 South Fifth. (Terre Haute)...
A pleasant memory of her will linger from her stay at home last summer to be with her elder sister, Anne, before her marriage to Dr. Elsenlohr of Germany. She remained for the wedding and saw the bridal couple off from the port in New York... ( I have the original)

I am very interested in anything that can further my research on the families: Krout, Kennedy,Bigelow, and Elsenlohr/Eisenlohr. My husbands gr. grandmother was Anne Elston Krout. Lesa
