I believe that we have a common family connection. My husband's great-grandmother was Susanna Kress and she had ties to Louisville Kentucky:
Susanna was from a large, poor family in Germany. When she immigrated to America, she knew she would not see her family again. She came to Louisville, Kentucky because she had cousins there by the name of Lamburtus, who were in the shoe repair busienss. Susanna worked as a maid to a wealthy family. She worked hard in order to send money home; Susanna would walk blocks to save the 5 cents streetcar fare. After the war, another cousin named Fredie Wirth returned to Germany and found the Kress family descendants doing very well. In the 1911 City Directory for Louisville, Kentucky, there are 11 individuals with the surname of Kress listed. Chas C. Kress is listed as a shoemaker. His residence is listed as 321 N. 19th. Also living at this address are Alice, August, Hattie B, and Louis M. It is possible, but not yet confirmed, that these might be cousins of Susanna Kress. "Our" Susanna Kress married Jacob Weber in Louisville. Later, the couple settled in Plymouth, OH.
I would love to have more information on the Kress family of Louisville, KY.
