Thanks for the reply, Zlatica. My grandfather told my mother very little about this part of the family. I don't know any first names, and my grandfather has passed on, but I am in the process of trying to find letters or records with their names. What we did learn was that they did come through Ellis Island because the name was changed to Scratch or Skratch. I'm not sure of its translated spelling. The fact that it was changed may shed light on when they did emigrate here. Does anyone know if Ellis Island stop changing names at a certain point?

That's interesting that Kratz is in Poland and Hungry. It makes my true ancestry seem even more mysterious. I always assumed they were German immigrants, but now I am not sure.

As for being Jewish, I have 2 clues that lead me to believe that Kratz is not a predominantly Jewish name. I corresponded with 2 people from Germany who said that there are many Kratzes in Germany today, and the assumption was that this would not be the case if it was a mainly Jewish name. If anybody disagrees with this assumption, please write and let me know. I would just like to know the truth. I have recently become very interested in religion.

The second conlusion came after I read on this site that a Jewish man had changed his name to Kratz during WWII, and was able to escape the country successfully with this name. This leads me to believe that Kratz is seen as a Christian name, of perhaps German, Polish, and Hungarian origin. Again if anyone disagrees with this, please don't hesitate to let me know.

I would like to find some church records. Can anyone point me to any?

Thanks again,

Megan
