A biography/family history of Mathias Kranz is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 2.
Mathias was born 18 Nov 1864, to Mathias & Lucille Kranz. His parents spent their entire lives in Germany. Mathias was educated in German schools until age 14, then served 4 years apprenticeship in the landscape dept. of the Imperial Government, working on the grounds of the Ex-Kaiser William. At age 18, he came to the US and lived in Minneapolis, working in a truck garden with his brother, Peter. On 7 Apr 1890, he came to Great Falls, MT, and in 1891, set up the first hot house for growing vegetables. He gradually built up the business until he was growing flowers exclusively.
On 11 Feb 1896, Mathias married Miss Annie Stergart, b. Iowa, daughter of Charles and Lizzie Stergart of Great Falls, MT. Children: Charles M., b. 9 Jun 1898; Lillian Dorothy, b. 15 Nov 1899.

Anna, died 1 Dec 1951, age 74, Great Falls, MT
Charles Mathias, died 28 Mar 1978, age 80, Great Falls, MT
