Rank designations changed after the Korean War and a SP3 then is a E3 now or Private First Class (PFC).

He was in the U.S. Army Transporation Unit, but I do not find one disignated the 85th online so far. You can do some more searching.

Our National Archives and Record Administration (NARA) has past military service records, they had a fire in 1973 and 20% survived of the Army from the Spanish American War to early 1960's. From what I understand you have to be next of kin to get copies. Website explains it.
