USS Hemminger

Hello, I am currently trying to locate information on my father-in-laws ship. We know he did some training in the great lakes - does anyone know the name of the military base? He was in the merchant marines and was a bosans(?)mate.
Also he stated that he was stationed in Norfolk VA. He would have served from about 1948 to 1952, he enlisted when he was under age. Name: Don. J. Clarey from Minnesota
Would love to hear from anyone who served with him, or just some basic back-ground information. Thanks to all who serve!
