I'm not sure how things are done in Florida, but in Illinois military discharge papers are filed at the County Clerks Offices. You have to prove the death of a person to receive any information from the discharge paper though (privacy act restrictions).
Have you tried getting a copy of his obituary from their library? Perhaps he belonged to a local Veteran's Organization in Florida and they might have some information. They could probably be of assistance in getting a military marker also.
You may want to get in touch with the funeral home too. Most keep excellant records.
