The USS Hemminger was a US Navy ship. Sounds like your father in law was in the navy instead of the merchant marines. You can go to Google.com and type in USS Hemminger and get alot of information. The Navy base at Great Lkes IL is the US Naval Training Center. The largest navy base in the world is at Norfolk VA.
