The Clayton Tribune, (Rabun Co. GA) Thursday, April 19, 1945, Page 1: “Judge Ernest Charles Kontz, well-known lawyer formerly of Atlanta, died late Monday at his home in Lakemont, Ga. Born Sept. 11, 1865, in Washington, D.C., son of Ernest Christine and Mary Elizabeth Kontz, he was graduated from the University of Georgia with a Ph. D. degree in 1887. The following years he was graduated from the law class of the University of Virginia and received his LL. B. Married to Elizabeth Thornton of LaGrange in 1898, Mr. Kontz came to Atlanta where he practiced law for a number of years. From 1891 until 1892 he was auditor and recorder for the city of Atlanta, a member of the city council from 1901 through 1902, and internal national tax assessor from 1907-1911. Judge Kontz was a Presbyterian elder, a member of the executive committee of the National Municipal League, a member of the Atlanta Scout Council, permanent president of the Class of 1887, University of Georgia, a Kappa Alpha, Phi Beta Kappa, a Mason and past city Masonic president, a member of the Lawyer’s & Burns Clubs, a member of the American, Georgia and Atlanta Bar Associations, the Capitol City Club and author of “Value of the Public Service Franchise.” The North Avenue Presbyterian Church and library school bear the name of Mr. Kontz. Judge Kontz was retired as a lawyer and had been making his home at Lakemont for the past several years. Surviving him are three children: Maj. Jack T. Kontz, Maj. Ernest Charles Kontz, Jr., stationed in the Pacific, and Mrs. W.D. Hooper of Birmingham, Michigan.” ---Atlanta Constitution. Notify Administrator about this message?
