The Ohio Koonces are actually Mercer County, Pennsylvania Koonces. Elsewhere in PA the name is spelled many other ways, but the KOONCE spelling is the Mercer County spelling. They came to Mercer County from Bedford County, PA. They relocated to PA from VA in the late 1700's when PA abolished slavery. The Koonces in the Akron area are all descended from Thadeous Bartholamew KOONCE, s/o Henry M. KOONCE and Jerusha (Nellie) McMAHAN both of Mercer County, PA. Thadeous married Grace May HALL in Akron in March 1891. Their children were Eleanor, Estelle, Violet, Gerald, and Howard, now all deceased. Thadeous disappeared in 1903 and was never heard from again; the facts point to desertion. We are still trying to discover what became of him and would appreciate any clues. We have some photos of him around the age of thirty. There are many decendents with various surnames still in the Akron area.
