I'm afraid I know nothing about the Koonce family, but I can tell you that there appears to have been more than one Koonce that fought in the war. Here are the Koonce Civil War Pension Applications:

NAME: Koonce, J.F.
COUNTY: Shelby
UNIT: 14th (Neely's) Cav.

NAME: Koonce, James Madison
UNIT: 31st Inf.

NAME: Koonce, N.P.
COUNTY: Lincoln
UNIT: 8th Inf.

NAME: Koonce, Needham Perr Y.
WIDOW: Koonce, Mary D.
PENSION #: W9059
COUNTY: Lincoln

Here's the link.
