Looking for a reliable birthdate for DAVID LUTHER KOON, son of George Adam Koon, III. David was born in Alabama, probably either Tuscaloosa or Pickens County, but his family later moved to Mississippi where David lived for the remainder of his life. He had three much older brothers who died in or shortly after the Civil War. He had at least one sister, Susan. He had a fourth brother, Obidiah, of nearly his age.
David's gravestone gives a birthdate of 20 Dec 1850, but I very much doubt that date is accurate. Federal censuses give the following ages for David:
4 in 1860
14 in 1870
23 in 1880
54 in 1910
63 in 1920
Alabama census for Pickens County in 1855 only lists one male under age of 21. Brother Obidiah was born in 1853 and would account for the one young male. If David had indeed been born in 1850 he would have been a second young male in that census.
In my mind, all of this adds up to a birthdate in the 1855-1857 timeframe. That would also be consistent with David being a couple years younger than Obidiah which I believe to be the case.
David was married four times so there should be marriage license applications. All marriages should have been in Mississippi. Probably in or near Prentiss County. Many people lie on marriage license applications, but it would be interesting to see what birthdates are there.
Death certificate information sometimes is provided by the same individual who provides gravestone information, so I would also consider David's death certificate information suspect if is also gives an 1850 birthyear.
