Here's a little more information, offered with the same caveat:
Matthew J. Kolts was born about 1840.(His birth is given as March 1843 on the 1900 census, but this seems a little too late by other records.)He married 3 times. His first wife--apparently your ancestor--was Nancy Jane Beales or Beals, who was born about 1839 in Nova Scotia.(Her name has been transcribed as Mary Jane on the birth records of Julia and Greely, but is Nancy Jane on the 1870 census, birth record of Levi, and later family records of Julia.)
Matthew married her about 1861.She was the mother of Herbert, Lewis James, Robert, Levi, Julia Nancy, and Greely. Her father, Samuel Beals, was born 13 Jan 1815 in Inglisville, Annapolis, Nova Scotia, christened 18 Jan 1815 at Clementsport, and died in 1884 in Peck, Sanilac County, Michigan. Her mother was Sarah Hersey, who was born about 1810 and died in 1878 in Peck.
Samuel Beals is descended from a Revolutionary War veteran. His genealogy has been traced for many generations. You can find it at the LDS genealogy website, www.familysearch.org.Enter Samuel Beals, born 1815 in Canada, and look at the listings under "Pedigree Resource File."You may want to contact the submitters of that information to learn more...
Matthew and Nancy appear in the 1870 census of Burnside Township, Sanilac County, Michigan, with their 5 oldest children. They are a little hard to find because Matthew's name looks like "Manton Koltz."His wife is "Nancy J."Herbert is listed as Henry, age 8.Lewis--your ancestor--is 6.
Apparently Nancy died about 1877 or 1878.Matthew married Mary E. Rumrell on 27 Nov 1878 in Lapeer County, Michigan.Mary was born about 1843 in Canada, had been married to a Mr. Eaton from England, and had a son Fredrick born about 1874 in Michigan. The 1880 census of Burnside Township, Lapeer County, Michigan shows J. Mathew Kolts living with his wife Mary, children Herbert, Lewis, Robert, Levi, Julia, Greely, and stepson Fredrick Eaton.
About 20 years later, Matthew married Tennie or Tennies C. Fairchild, mentioned above.
Some details about Lewis James' siblings...Julia Nancy Kolts married Roland C. Stafford, born in Canada, on 16 July 1889 at Grand Rapids, Michigan. She died 17 Nov 1958.
Levi married Julia B. Noon, born in New York in 1872, on 28 May 1892 in Grand Rapids. They had a son Arthur J. Kolts, born 1895 in Michigan and a daughter Ethel J. Kolts, born 1897 in Ohio.
Greely married Alta J. Mizner, widow of Arthur J. Keech, on 20 Nov 1894 in Grand Rapids.
