Notes from a German archives:
Kohl is Alemannic in origin; from Middle High German--cabbage, cabbage head, surname of a cabbage farmer.Kohl as a word was being used by the 12th Century.
The Historical Research Center:
This naming convention may also be traceable to "Kohlbach," a town in the region around Freiburg just east of the Rhine River in what is today Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany--hence a resident or native of Kohl. There was a resident of Konstance, Switzerland in 1480 named Johann Kohl (see Regesta Episcoporum Constantiensium).
Although a crest would not belong to us (granted only to a person hundreds of years ago), the blazon of arms for Kohl in general was a tree trunk (antiquity and strength) atop a yellow band running from upper left downward to bottom right, with two hunting horns (fertility and abundance) in the upper right and lower left; background white (purity and integrity of spirit).
