Koger House
On Sunday 7 December 2003, a historical marker was dedicated
in front of the Koger House on Wire Road in Dorchester County, SC.The marker was paid for by the Generals Gordon-Capers Camp 123, SCV.
It was announced during opening remarks that Mr. Fitzhugh Sweatman owner of the house, had donated the building to The Upper Dorchester County Historical and Preservation Society.Mr. Sweatman also donated an acre of land.
Efforts are now under way to raise money to restore the house, a two story building that some believe was orginally used as a tavern before Capt. Joseph Koger, a veteran of the American Revolution turned the house over to his son Joseph Koger III.
The inscription on the front side of the marker indicates:
"KOGER-MURRAY-CARROLL HOUSEThis house an excellent example of early Federalism architecture was built about 1800 for Joseph Koger, Jr. (1779-1866) planter, state representative 1806-1812, Colleton District Sheriff 1813-1818 and state senator 1818-1838.Koger moved to Mississippi in 1838 and sold the house to his brother-in-law John Soule Murray (1792-1844) planter and state senator 1840-1843."
On the other side of the marker, it is indicated that, " In
1865, John Parsons Carroll (1807-883), chancellor of the state court of equity bought the house as a summer retreat.."
The marker makes reference to Joseph Koger, Jr.He is generally refered to as Joseph Koger III.The man refered to as Joseph Koger I came to South Carolina from Germany in the 1730's, his son Joseph Koger II served in the Revolution, and Joseph Koger III was the last Koger owner of the house.
At the time Joseph Koger III was sheriff of Colleton District, most of what is now known as Dorchester County was a part of Colleton District.Dorchester County was formed in 1897.
