The area you are looking for might be south east of Darmstadt, Hessen in the Odenwaldkreis. There are König(Koenig) families in the areas around Michelstadt, and Höchst. There is even the very tiny town of Bad König!
In the time period of your GGrfathers birth there were König families in several towns in the area, Wersau, Hollerbach, Forstel and Annelsbach to name a few. He is in the 1870 census and his birthplace is listed as Hesse-Darmstadt.
I don't have any more information than that. I have just started looking into the König familiess there. The mother of my GGrmother's 2nd husband was a König.
