I'm talking to myself again. :p So, I'm quite sure that I'm not related to the descendants of Christian Koenig of Switzerland now. But with the help of Nadine Mayer, I was able to narrow things down. She's found lots of Koenig's who have lived in McKees Rocks. She gave me a copy of a 1910 and 1930 federal census documents. It seems in the 1910 census that my family spelled their names "Kanick" and was corrected to "Koenig" in the 1930 census. Whether this was just an error in the 1910 census or if they spelled their name this way due to Americanization name changes, I'm not sure. However, what has me convinced that this is my family is that they have always pronounced their names like "kay-nick." I'm almost positive that the German pronunciation for Koenig is something like "koo-nick" but my family are convinced that they descend from Germany and that "kay-nick" is the German pronunciation. If I'm right and their wrong, maybe we came from Switzerland or Belgium where there are native French speakers and maybe that's why we pronounce our names this way? In any case, I'm quite positive that my great grandfather's name was Joseph Koenig. This man was born somewhere around 1881 to 1882. There is another Joseph later born around 1909 to 1910, and this would coincide with the fact my father told me that he had an uncle "Jo" as well. He told me that all his father's brothers and sisters were older than him. He mentioned he had uncles and aunts by the names of Helen, Jo, Fred, Carl, Martha, and Rosella. From the 1910 census, there was: Eva Kanick(1875?) John Kanick(1879?) Joseph Kanick(1881?) Josephine Kanick(1885?) Hellen Kanick(1903?) Mary Kanick(1908?) Joseph Kanick(1909?) From the 1930 census, there was: Joseph Koenig(1882?) Josephine Koenig(1884?) Mary Koenig(1908?) Joseph Koenig(1910?) Frank Koenig(1912?) Josephine Koenig(1914?) William Koenig(1915?) Albert Koenig(1917?) As you can see, there are a couple names that match up. I'm quite convinced this is my family. Whether all Kanick's from the Pittsburgh area are related to my line or not, I can't be sure. I did a google search and found quite a few Kanick's here. Notify Administrator about this message?
