I think it is a mistake to say that Garrett Cowen/Koen of Albemarle Co., NC, ancestry has been traced back to the Netherlands. Garrett's will (name spelled Cowen) was proven in 1721 in Albemarle Co., NC.
In the Koen family book "The Glory Trail, Koen and Kin from Coast to Coast" by Ottis Vaughn Koen, there are mentions of Koen's from the Netherlands but no evidence that connects these Koen's to Garrett Koen of Albemarle. Ottis Koen gives a record of a "Gerrit Koen" who was born about 1720 in South Holland, Netherlands, near the time that Garrett Cowen died in NC. There is no indication of a connection between these two people other than similar names. Where did Garrett Koen come from? This is question that Ottis Koen could not find the answer for. On page 11 of his book Ottis Vaughn Koen said he did not know the origins of Garret Koen. While this family may have had it's beginnings in the Netherlands that has not as yet been determined as fact.
The fact that Garrett was in a neighborhood of English Quakers would tend to make one at least take a look at a British beginning. Both Cowen and Garrett are British names. Considering the geographical origins of Garrett's neighbors and of the families that his children married into one should keep an open mind concerning the background of Garrett and where he and his ancestors may have come from. If we keep an open mind and don't place limits on where this Koen family may have originated maybe we will find the missing link.
