I have a Jacob Kabel, immigrated to America in c. 1850 from Baden, Germany. He must have come with family as he is only 7 years old at the time of his immigration.I think we may be working on related families and may be able to share information. He seems to have some connections to St. Louis, MO also.
Here's what I have on him so far:
Jacob Kabel
Born 1844 Baden Germany(source-children's birth cert.)
1850-1851 came to America per family oral history
1844-1865-have no record of him
1865-1866-ordered into the conferderacy-exact date not
given-member 1st division,Company I,3rd regiment
of the CSA- he would be 20-21 years old at this
time
George Koebel(sic)was also mustered
in from New Orleans-a Pvt. in Co. I,
4th Regiment, 1st division of the Louisiana
Militia with him; Times Picayune also lists
a George Koebel(sic) born 1828 in Baden
Germany as dying in New Orleans on 1 Feb. 1911
I believe they are brothers. George had 5
children.
1867-resides at 218 St. Ferdinand St./New Orleans-(city
directory)
1868-no listing-very likely still in same place
1869-1871-resides at 218 St. Ferdinand St./New Orleans
occupation-woodchopper (city directory)
A Jacob Kabell(sic),tailor, also listed at corner of
Port & Robertson in 1871
c. 1870-married Amelia Reichling-she was born in St. Louis, MO-not sure if they married in St. Louis or New Orleans-All censuses list her as being from St. Louis, MO-Amelia was only 17 years old in 1870-unless her parents came to New Orleans, I doubt she traveled alone; more than likely, hewent to St. Louis-Jacob was 26 years old at this time. All their children that I can find were born in New Orleans.
1872-Corner of Uruquart & Annette St/New Orleans-(Jacob's
birth cert.)
1877-Lives at Uruquart and Annette Sts./New Orleans
Mary's birth cert.)
1878-Corner Uruquart & Annette St./New Orleans (Lena's
birth cert.)
1880-resides at 47 Annette St. between Uruquart & Villierre
New Orleans, LA/occupation-woodchopper/laborer (city
directory & Michael's birth cert.)
1881-resides at 45 Annette St./New Orleans-occupation-grocer
(city directory)- His son Michael Jacob was a
grocer/butcher throughout his life- this seems to
be the beginning of the family business.
1882-resides at 49 Uruquart St.-occupation-butcher
(city directory)
1885-1886-no listing-may have moved either to Abita Springs
or Covington LA or the state of Mississippi where
his grandson stated he lived for a short while.
Several of his children, as well as his wife, died
between 1885-1920, possibly from yellow fever
1900-resides at Roman St./New Orleans/ owns his own home/
& isa naturalized citizen per 1900 census/lives
with Amelia and his children still-several children
now deceased
1900-1920-Amelia dies- secession found in New Orleans-Mary
(d. 1920)still alive at time of her mother's death
1926-died at 2712 Burgundy St./New Orleans at the age of 83-is buried in St. Roch cemetary in New Orleans- has a
new wife now-Anna Kreeger per his death notice in the
Times Picayune Newspaper.
Personal information; Jacob had red hair,as did his son Michael Jacob, a famous temper to match, and spoke only german. His was Lutheran by religion. His birthplace is sometimes listed as Baden-Wurtemburg and sometimes Hamburg Germany. he signed his own name to various documents as "Jacob Kabel" with umlotes(sp.?) over the "a".
His first wife was Amelia (or Emelia) Reichling (Reichen, Reiken, Rigten, or sometimes Wolf) On Michael, her son's birth certificate, she is listed as Reichling and on her marriage license-Wolf. The other names are on her children's other birth certificates. His second wife is anna Kreeger.
He and Amelia had as many as 11, possibly 12, children:
(1) Jacob(21 May 1872-5 May 1926)m. Rose Neu(Nie-Louise's sister)both buried in St. Louis cemetary
(2) Mary (26 February 1877-died in 1920-buried in St. Louis Cemetary/New Orleans)
(3)Elina (Lena)(13 December 1878-died before 1900)
(4)Nick(1879-died before 1900)
(5)Michael Jacob m. Louise Nie (3 June 1880-23 January 1946-he & Louise buried in St. Louis Cemetary/New Orleans)
(6)Amelia(June 1882-after 1920-at her mother's secession)
wife of John Simpson
(7) William Louis(1888-1946)m. Catherine Liuzza-both buried inSt. Louis Cemetary
(8) Louis(1891-after 1920-at his mother's secession)
(9)Matilda(1893-after 1920-at her mother's secession)
wife of Ernest Robinson
(10)Charles (died as an infant-buried in St. Roch cemetary/New Orleans)
(11)Annie Kable(sic) (died in 1921-buried with Mary-is this her child or her sister?)
**Michael Jacob(son of Jacob)is my ggrandfather-he died in 1934 in New Orleans-his wife died in 1964. I have a great deal of information on him as well including a wedding photo of him and Louise Johanna Neu, his wife.
I have some evidence that they might be cousins or somehow related, as well. Her father's name was George Neu/Nie and George's parents were Nicholas Neu/Nie, a gardener, and a lady named Reiching from Bavaria, i.e, her grandmother was a Reichling and Michael's mother was a Reichling.
This name is not very common. There may be afamily connection here in St. Louis, MO.
Jacob's grave, which I located at the entrance to St. Roch cemetary in New Orleans, contains several family members names: In german the grave proclaims "here died in Freedom".
Jacob Kabel (his son)m. Rose Neu (this is confusing as they are buried in St. Louis Cemetary unless they were moved later)
Mary Kabler(sic) 4/11/1872 m. Jules Lamothe
Louisa Kahl(sic)02/13/1877 m. Charles H. Vogh
Eleonore Kolb(sic) 04/01/1872 m. Antoine Guzzleman
Adele Kaphler (sic) 11/23/1878 m. Dietrich Feil
John Kappler (sic) 05/25/1885 m. Juba Woltrer
-also some Knoebel(sic) buried there-names are difficult to read as they are in german and there are so many all in the same vault.
Note all the different spellings on the same grave.Jacob's name was not listed but his obituary says he is buried there- I don't know if they ran out of room or what. This was the only "Kabel" grave I could find in the whole cemetary. (it is not in a very safe part of the city and I don't plan to go back)
Additional information:
The 1910 census lists a Jacob Koebel-this may be the Jacob Kabel (tailor) from the 1871 directory
white age 50 in Jeferson Parish (near New Orleans)
with family members
Dora wife age 49 born in Germany
Alice daughter 26
Lilian daughter 18
Oliver son 16
Elmer son 9
Hilda daughter 6
I cannot establish the relationship of this Jacob to my family but am sure they are related. Can anyone help?
The same census lists:
Julius Kabel white age 50
in Acadia Parish (city of Rayne, LA) which is near where I live-about 3 hours from New Orleans today by interstate
Luella wife 44
Julius Jr. son 19
Arthur son 17
Fisher son 13
Robert son 10
and Jessie Fisher (sister in law) 27
In the 1900 census, a Mary Kabel is listed
white female living alone age 71
birthplace Germany
living in New Orleans on Port St.(this street plus all others listed are in the old part of New Orleans-in the French Quarter)
I think she may be Jacob's sister butI am unsure. Can anyone help with this?
Many of you speak of an "Uncle Mike"The name Michael Jacob or Jacob Michael is common in our family (we have 9)as are the names: Christopher, Christina, Gretchen, & Louise or Louise Johanna. These seem to fit with many of your research. This family also seems to move around a great deal.
I am hoping the information I posted will help some of you as well as help us connect our families together.
Ifanyone can add t what I have, I would like very much if you could contasct me a [email protected] you very much.
