a period portrait has recently been discovered of the legendary innkeeper of the Kochersperger's Hotel (sometimes known as "Sans Sounci") at Gray's Ferry in Philadelphia. Martin Henry Kochersperger was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania on November 1st, 1779.
His family came to Philadelphia around 1780, were farming in an area called Passyunk Township. Sometimes in the 1820's Martin Henry Kochersperger acquired the inn at Gray's Ferry. He appeared to have had his younger brother Henry as a tenant, but it is not documented. Martin Henry was married not less than 3 times and had with all wives children. He seemed to have favored his only son by his second wife, Thomas Kochersperger who was running the inn for a number of years.
The painting, from appearance/style/type of clothing can be dated sometimes between 1830 and 1840 and it was handed down among the descendants of Thomas Kochersperger.
I have posted the painting onto the internet, on www.genealogy.com's virtual cemetery under the following link:

Please feel free to have a look.
