While looking at the 1880 census for KOBERs, I found this entry for Manhattan:
George KOBER, 33, b NY, "dealer in music", fa/mo b Germany
Pauline, wife, 33, b NY
George, son, 7, b NY
William, son, 4, bNY
Pauline, dau, 1, b NY
I think George, jr, is the George KOBER that married my g'fa's sis Rose, and moved to Woodhaven, Queens, NYC, by the time of the 1920 census. Rose KOBER is the one I'm hoping may help me leap over my brick wall, as her brother went by two different surnames (at least), and never bothered to let anyone in subsequent generations know what the original name was. To complicate, the 1920 census shows George and Rose living with Rose's mom, listed as Anna KRAUSE (may be KROUSE, can't read writing), which I have listed as her maiden name (per my g'fa's death cert, which I can't trust anyhow), so I can't be sure that is the right surname to run with, either!
If anyone is researching this particular KOBER line and could help me out, I'd appreciate hearing from you!
