Knox, Samuel R.

Birth: 17 Aug 1825 in Franklin, Maine, USA

Father:Unknown
Mother:Unknown

Wife: Slater, Angeline E. Angeline was born in Ohio.

NOTE: Angeline was the daughter of William Crawford Slater (b.Berrien, Michigan d. 1849 California) and Sarah Ellen Moore (b. 1807 Pennsylvania d. 1885 Wisconsin) William Crawford Slater was a "Forty-Niner". In March 1849, William C Slater and his brother (whose name is not known) started overland together with two ox teams trekking from Berrien County, Michigan, to Wisconsin. They camped every night. One morning William's ox team was gone. He found his oxen after searching for three days. An old memorandum states that 'this made him so angry he wouldn't follow his brother. His brother drove on and left him. They never saw each other again.' Communication in those days would have been difficult at best. William's last letter to his wife and children written while enroute overland by ox team; it was dated June 16, 1849. William died in California sometime between reaching the Gold Fileds in September 1849, but before the end of the year.

Angeline reports she had 13 or 14 children depending on which census you look at. The nine above are the only ones I have identified so far. William Henry Knox is my maternal great grandfather.

Notes:

Samuel R. Knox and his wife Angeline are found on the following census reports:

In 1850 he was a farmer, age 24, living in Dunn, Dane, County Wisconsin.

His mother-in-law (Angeline's mother), Sarah Slater, and three of her children lived with them.

In 1860 he was a farmer, age 35, living in Lisbon, Juneau County, Wisconsin.

In 1870 he was a minister, age 45, living in Creek Township, DeWitt County, Illionois.

In 1880 no profession is listed. He was, age 55, living in Glen Elder Township, Mitchell County, Kansas.

In 1885 (state of Kansas Census) he was a minister, age 59, living in Glen Elder Township, Mitchell County, Kansas. His name is mispelled "Konx", but Angeline is listed as "Knox".

The Federal Census of 1890 was destroyed in a fire in Washington D.C. No records.

In 1900 he was a minister, age 74, living in Wyandott Township, Wyandott County, Kansas.

Samuel died on 2 November 1902 in Palmer, Washington County, Kansas.

Angeline is found on the 1910 Census living with her daughter Rose Ellen and her husband James Michel in Sheridan Township, Washington County, Kansas.

I have not yet found a date of death for Angeline.

My mother refers to her grandparents as "Pennsylvania Dutch" because of their devoutness. Angeline would not permit playing cards in her house.

Samuel Knox always claimed to be born in Maine and similarly claimed that both of his parents were born in Maine. Since census reports before 1850 only list head of household, there are too many "Knoxes" in Maine in 1840
to figure out which family Samuel descended from.

Sorry I could not help you identify Samuel's parents.
