I have a couple of questions regarding information on the gravestones of a few of the original Mecklenburg County Knox's. Last week, I was in NC on business and I stayed over Saturday to visit and photograph the Steele Creek Cemetery. Some of the info I found on some gravestones seems to conflict with some of the generally accepted info I have for certain of my ancestors. James Knox's (1751-1842) gravestone states that he died in the 81st year of his life. While his birth date is generally accepted as 1751, the inscription indicates that his real birth date is 1761. There is also a partially illegible inscription below the primary inscription that appears to read "(illegible) Revolutionary War(?)in 1776". Did he serve in the Revolution? If so, and he was actually 81 in 1842, he would have been 16 in 1776. Anybody have any light to shed on this? Hannah Knox I believe to be Hannah McFalls Knox (1767-1847) and her gravestone is inscribed "....aged 80 years", which confirms the birth/death dates I had for her. Her gravestone also bears the inscription "consort of J___ s Knox"; I have her down in my tree as the wife of James Knox. However, even after attempting to "feel" the illegible letter on the gravestone itself, I could not tell what it was. Does anyone have anything to the contrary? I believe the gravestone of "Ann Knox" (1727-1813) to be the grave of Elizabeth Ann Gaston Knox, John Knox's (1717-1777) wife. It does bear the incription "...who died at the age of 86". John Knox's 1717-1777 gravestone is almost illegible but there is enough information legible to verify the identity. I also found the gravestone of Samuel Knox (1763-1833) Finally, there are four more gravestones I found that, I am sure, have to be ancestors of mine! : Nancy Knox (unknown - 1829) Nancy Knox (1764-1841) Mary Knox (1800-1835) "died in the 35th year of her age" Jane H. Knox (unknown - 1810) All of these gravestones are located side-by side in the cemetery in one spot. Anybody have any clues on Mary, Jane, or the two Nancys? BTW, I have uploaded photos of these graves at Find-a-grave.com, if anyone is interested. Steele Creek Memorial Cemetery in Mecklenburg County, NC Notify Administrator about this message?
