Sangamon County pioneer books have Thomas Knotts (Sr.) coming from Lee County, VA before 1819;it states that VA was his native state. I have only found him once with online databases for county taxes so he must have originated from another location in VA. He marries Ella/Elly Young and has at least two of his children in VA before heading west to Sangamon County, IL.

Thanks for the info; I'll try to pursue the lead. I am sure others have blazed this trail many years previously. Are there any of you that know Thomas's ancestor line? Thomas is the father of Lucy, Albion, Thomas Jr./Japh Thomas, Ruth, Amelia, and Daniel. The DNA project sounds neat.
