I am descended from Jesse Knighten's daughter Sarah Frances, born 16 June 1856 in Magnolia, Columbia, Arkansas. She married my great-grandfather Spencer Howard Prewitt on 8 July 1878 and died on 2 October 1885 in Little River county, Arkansas. My grandmother was born in Hope, Hempstead county in 1879 as well as her 3 sisters(Bill Clinton was not the only person born in Hope). Apparently, the family moved from Jackson county to Columbia county after 1850 and before Sarah Frances was born in 1856. They moved to Little River county by the early 1880s.

I have the children of Jesse and Elizabeth Knighten as: Amanda M. born abt. 1849, Martha born abt. 1850 and married Andrew Jackson Warren, Mary born abt. 1852, Sarah Frances, Joseph R. F. born abt. 1860 and married L.A. Cochrane in 1887 in Little River county, William B. born May 1862 and married Bettie Davis in 1888 in Little River county, and Eliza J. born abt. 1867 and married Jesse Billingsley in 1884 in Little River county.

Apparently, Elizabeth died before 28 July 1886, for that is the date that Jesse married Marinda A. or Mary Andrews in Little River county. They had 2 daughters Nettie born April 1889 and Susan born Oct 1890, both in Little River county (see 1900 census).

Marinda may have been Indian, since there are land records mentioning her in the 1880s in Little River county (see KNIGHTEN MARINDA A 3 12S 32W 0 1888/10/18 JOHN R DENTY ASSIGNEES OF TIS-AH-TO-NAH REP OF
TAUSH-OK-CHIAK RECEIPT 5883

The 1900 census also states that Jesse J. Knighten was born in February 1826 in SC, not 1821. There was also a T. M. Knighton and an R. L. Knighton in Columbia county in 1860. Jesse died in Little River county sometime after 1900. I have heard that he served in the Civil War but have not found his record.

Who else was in Jesse's family? I have records on the family of a Josiah Knighten from SC, who came to East Feliciana parish, LA in the 1830s that looks very promising, since one of his sons was named Jesse born 1n 1799 in SC.
