When Silas (1802) left home, he went to Allegany County NY where he met and married Pheobe Short. The Shorts lived in Hume, NY. I have seen an extract from a letter written by Pheobe saying that Silas was living with his uncle when they met. The uncle is not named, but there was a Knight family living in Allegany Co at the time (in Angelica but the name of the town today is Scio). This is the family of Joseph Knight. Both He and his son Silas (this family seems to have had 4 Silas Knights) where early setters in the area.
Joseph was from Mass (Paxton I think), and he had a brother John born in 1755. Was this John the father of John (1786)? I do not know, but it is possible. I have looked for conformation on this, but so far ????
I will be interested to see anything further you find on this - good luck.
