Zachariah, Seth and Tarlton Knight,SC>GA
Posted by: Bob Burton of Gainesville, FL Date: April 22, 2001 at 21:19:01
In Reply to: Re: James Knight of Beaufort Co, SC by Betty Knight Pickren of 9439

Some researchers of the KNIGHT family that migrated from Beaufort District, SC to the Tattnall/Liberty Co, GA area have speculated that Zachariah Knight (d. 1791)and Chloe Smart are the parents of Seth Knight (1795-1853)and Tarlton Knight (1797-1865).

I do not believe that Zachariah Knight is the father of Seth and Tarlton Knight. Zachariah Knight died in 1799 in Liberty Co, GA and his widow Chloe remained in Liberty Co, GA through 1820. A known son Britton Knight appears in Liberty Co, GA records 1798-1817; afterwards in Alachua Co, FL. Another known son Elias Knight appears in Liberty Co, GA records 1807-1821; afterwards in Alachua Co, FL.Another known son George Knight appears in Liberty Co, GA records 1817-1821; afterwards he also appears in Alachua Co, FL. So it would seem that the Zachariah and Chloe Knight family lived in Liberty Co, GA 1799-1821.

Now what about Seth and Tarlton Knight. They were born in 1795 and 1797, respectively, and thus were born before Zachariah Knight died in 1799. However, they both first appear as newlywed young men in St. Peter's Parish in Beaufort District, SC. Shortly after the census, they both migrated to lower Tattnall Co, GA, where they remained for most of their lives. If Seth and Tarlton Knight were indeed sons of Zachariah Knight, why are Chloe's baby boys in Beaufort District, SC in 1820 and not in Liberty Co, GA with their mother and older brothers? I have not seen one shred of evidence that mentions Seth and Tarlton Knight along with Zachariah Knight and Chloe Smart.

I believe that there is a greater probability that the father of Seth and Tarlton ia Solomon Knight (b. 1770-1780). In the 1800 census, Solomon Knight appears as head of a family in St. Peters Parish in Beaufort Dist, SC census, page 112. Also enumerated are M26-45,F26-45,2M<10, 2F<10. Could the 2M<10 be Seth and Tarlton Knight.?
In the 1820 census, Solomon, Seth and Tarlton Knight all appear in the St. Peters Parish in Beaufort Dist, SC, pages 14-15. What do you think about my theory. Does anybody know anything abount Solomon Knight?
