I am on the same search as Cary Houchins. We are ulitmately trying to find out what ever happened to Helen P. (Knepper) Johnson and her daughter Mary Ellen Johnson (b: Aug 25, 1942)after the death of Arthur D. Johnson in 1944, who was Helen's husband and Mary Ellen's father. I would love to hear from anyone who might have additional knowledge of this connection. I have tracked down some interesting and yet confusing information while searching for Cary's and my Helen Knepper who married Arthur D. Johnson on Jul 16, 1940 in Dakota Co., NE. Their marriage record read as follows: Dakota County, NE Marriage Record, Book 19; Page 68, Helen P. Knepper age 18; "Father / Guardian": "Marie Knepper"; Father born in Iowa; Mother: Marie E. McDonald; Arthur Donald Johnson age 21; Father: Edward T. Johnson; M: Laura Reed. Married Jul 16, 1940. (They were most probably residing in Sioux City.) From this marriage record it is unclear as to who Helen's father was which leads me to think that she was born out of wedlock to Marie E. McDonald or had a different last name when she was born, or that Helen was adopted by Charles R. Knepper and Marie E. McDonald after they were married. From the 1930 Sioux City, Woodbury Co., Iowa Census entry, below, it appears that Marie "H." is the wife of Charles R. Knepper, but she is too, young to be the mother of the chldren listed with them. Its apparent that the children are from Charles R. Knepper's first marriage, which was to Callia Edna Weeks who died on Jun 01, 1929. Helen does not appear in this Census entry, even though she would have been alive in 1930, for she was born in 1922. 1930 Sioux City, Ward 18, Woodbury Co., Iowa Census page 234A, ED-56, lists: Knepper, Charles R. Head M/W/41/M age 20/ NE/IN/IN Engineer / Hotel Marie "H." wife F/W/28/M age 28/ NY/NY/NY Charlotte dau. F/W/12/S IA/NE/IN Frances "son" "F"/W/10/S IA/NE/IN Thomas son M/W/ 8/S IA/NE/IN (1322 25th St.) I haven't, yet, looked for a marriage record for Marie McDonald to Charles R. Knepper, but Marie and Charles Knepper must have divorced some time between 1930 and 1946, for both of them re-marry someone else, in 1946, in Union Co., SD. I have located this Don Cruickshank in the Social Security Death Index and he died in March 1982 in Danville, IL. He was born on 29 Jan 1894 which matches up with the 1900 Sioux City Census where he's with his parents, James and Mary J. Cruickshank, and with a birth date of "Jan 1894". Social Security Death Index: Name: Don Cruickshank SSN: 484-16-5876 Last Residence: 61832 Danville, Vermilion, Illinois, United States of America Born: 29 Jan 1894 Died: Mar 1982 State (Year) SSN issued: Iowa (Before 1951 ) I located Marie Cruickshank in the SSDI, too. Her last residence was listed as Batavia, Jefferson Co., Iowa and she died on 5 Apr 1988. Social Security Death Index: Name: Mary E. Maybe it will tell us something about Marie Cruickshank's "survivors" such as Helen and Mary Ellen. Carl T. Musselman Omaha, NE KapnKarl1@aol.com The following Census entries are merely possibilities for our Marie E. McDonald and have not been positively identified, but these women do appear to be about the possible matches throughout the country. 1920 Poughkeepsie, Dutchess Co., NY Census page 127A lists: (Hudson River State Hospital) McDonald, "Mary" E.
