From John Burton Cleland's work, " The Ancient Family of Cleland", pp.20,22,24.
(f)Archibald Cleland (34)--Ditto. James Dunlop of that ilk in 1609 is surety for Elizabeth Stewart, Lady Kneland, in 100merks, and for Andro Archibald and Johne Knelandis, brothers of the Laird of Kneland, 500 merks each, to to harm David Little of Badro(n)wisgill, or Thomas Anderson, his servant. (Reg. Privy Council)
[The Laird of Cleland at this time was James Cleland (29)--13th Cleland of that ilk, who succeeded 1608. Died probably ca. 1635 (see pg.22)...The father of the above was William Cleland -- 12th Cleland of that ilk.Chief c. 1597. He married Elizabeth or Marion,sis. of Walter Stewart, 1st Lord of Blantyre.(see pg.20) ]
